Blog Post #5

I've learned several things about designing a sound research study. Specifically, the process of designing a literature review: finding the research I need to make the literature review cohesive and helpful in the process of creating a research study. Additionally, having a strong base of understanding regarding the various methods of research helped me understand what the best method would be in order to make a sound research study. From there, it helped to understand specific formatting -- the questions defining the specific sections of a sound research study -- in creation of a research proposal because I had to be very, very specific in what steps needed to be taken as part of the research study, making it clearer from my own standpoint, what processes would need to happen in order to make a sound research study. In terms of how these processes have taught me about my future roles as a technical and professional communicator: I would like to go into grant writing, or at least ...

Blog Post #4 Plan for Revision

As far as the research proposal, I don't feel like there is currently a need for revision. The parts of the proposal that outline what will be researched currently feel sufficient. The help I received from Cheyenne seemed to confirm that the study seems to be enough, currently, to fulfill the requirements of the research proposal.

Blog Post #3 on research gap

My research gap regarding gendered expectations and documents of hire (i.e. resumes, letters of recommendation, digital profiles) has to do with involving a larger sampling of data comprising many different documents of hire. The research I found involving documents of hire and gendered expectations all tended to focus on one document of hire or type of document of hire, rather than focusing on many types in one study or as part of their research design. Additionally, there is a research gap in terms of using a broader gender-coding system that is specific to agentic vs communal characteristics. For example, characteristics that are generally described as the expression of agency or control over oneself or of others and characteristics that are generally described as the expression of showing concern for the welfare of others.

Research Question: How do gendered expectations influence the content and structure of cover letters and resumes, and how does this affect hiring decisions in different industries? Blog Post #1 on topic interests

Possible research question that I have:  Can the analysis of nonverbal components in gifs provide insights into the development of new visual languages and forms of communication in the digital age? Another topic I think I could look into is how memes are increasingly being used to communicate nonverbally and how that translates to professional writing in terms of communication between professional colleagues. Another topic could be surrounding how often generation Z uses memes/gifs to communicate and what that could mean for future professional writing circles. Or, what it means for current professional writing careers where there are likely a mix of different generations where there is disparity between how those different generations use and understand memes. A last topic idea I had in mind would be why there are differences, nonverbally speaking, between memes and gifs and what implications that has for professional settings currently and/or in the future.
